INDEPENDENT 8 DAY CYCLE HOLIDAY

Day 1: You will be met at the train station in Champs St Bris.  There are frequent trains from Paris (Gare de Lyon).  It is a short a 15-minute drive to your Chambre d’hote in Escolives Ste Camille.

Day 2: After breakfast, you will set out along the canal to Auxerre.  Auxerre has a long history as a centre for learning as well as a major transportation hub, for canal boats.  The medieval gate with its clock is a must see! We can picnic riverside before we head back in the direction of Escolives.

Day 3: Heading off in the opposite direction you cycle along the canal to the small town of Mailly la Ville and a picnic on the banks of the Nivernais.  After lunch you set out for the village of Asquins, your home base for the rest of the tour.  The gite is situated on the route of the pilgrims, Saint Jacques de Compostelle

Day 4: You begin your exploration with the village of Bazoches the home of Vauban, a military strategist who redesigned France’s defenses for Louis XIV. On your return you will visit some Gallo-Roman baths.  These saline springs were originally used during the Iron Age.  Next is St Pere on the banks of the River Cure.  This small village is home to a beautiful Gothic church that is well worth a visit.

Day 5: Today explore rural Burgundy at its best – forest roads, villages lost in time, and tiny vineyards tucked away in a pasture.  You cycle along the river bank past secret fishing spots.  Take time to explore the village church in Voutenay then we recommend lunch at the Auberge de Voutenay one of the most delicious, beautifully presented meal you’ve ever eaten.

Day 6: oday you will visit the basilica of Ste Madeleine at Vezelay.  You are now ready to make our own pilgrimage.  The village is set on a high point overlooking the Morvan., providing excellent views of the landscape below.

Day 7: Your destination is the medieval centre of Avallon, set high on a granite spur.  The climb is worth it!  Tour the ramparts be sure to step into the peace and calm of its many churches.  Enjoy the shops and photo opportunities.  The Tour de L’Horloge is a wonderful 15th century gate complete with clock.

Day 8: Your route takes us through the countryside, past small villages to the Nivernais canal.  You will parallel the canal and stop at the towering cliffs of Rochers de Saussois for a picnic. On our return, you will visit Chatel-Censoir, and make time for a refreshment at the local bar tabac.

Day 9: After breakfast, you will be taken to the station at Sermizelles in time to get onboard for further French adventures
